So... I'm not exactly the most outgoing type of person. I like staying home, watching TV while sketching... that sort of thing. I don't lead an extraordinarily exciting life, but I like it that way. Though... this puts me in a pickle, because with that said, staying at home and watching TV while sketching isn't exactly the greatest thing to blog about on a regular basis... :\

I am such an old man... That is a true statement. Nope, not even an old lady... An old man... Like Carl Fredricksen from UP. I'm grumpy, I'm not a fan of kids (especially the loud, blood-curdling screaming ones from next door), and my feet are always cold. Not to mention my stories (aka blog posts about posting regularly) are repetitive, my jokes are corny, and I always, always, ALWAYS am in need of a nap. Hahah... Yep... me = old man.

Oh dear...

Well, in any case, the point of that little anecdote was that while I am going to try my best to post a blog on a regular basis, there may be times where the content is not as interesting to you the viewer, and more a cathartic post for me. :) After all, what is a blog, but an online journal. Nothing too personal of course, that'd be a bit creepy...

And now for a totally different topic... It's Lunar New Year!! :D As most of you probably have seen/heard/know already, it's the year of the rabbit!! And, like its natural counterpart, I hope this year is abundant, fruitful, and very prosperous for all...

Wow... I kinda fail... I realized I never even posted the full paintings from the group show in November! =__= I sincerely apologize... But as per usual, life is crazy busy. But I'm grateful. Things have been challenging, but I'm taking a new perspective and seeing each trying time as a chance, an opportunity, to grow, learn, and move forward to the next goal.

In any case, here's to more positive thinking! And also trying to finally stick to a semi-regular blogging schedule. Wish me luck!! (No, really, please wish me luck, because this is perhaps the hardest goal for me to stick to~) XD

The pieces below were showcased at Pop Monster store/gallery this past November. The time frame to create these was nothing short of insanely fast, but I'm pretty proud that I was able to pull off these 4 paintings in about a month's time. :D

The show was representative of each artist's unique, quirky qualities and how it all somehow meshed together while staying true to our own voices. And while it was titled "We Eat Paint", I'd just like to confirm that no real paint was consumed.

I know I've been gung-ho about traditional mediums for a while, but for the sake of making the deadline, I opted for the digital route. Although, I couldn't totally exclude my love for something tactile, so I mounted the prints on 3/4in plywood. ♥

My web host has been less than pleasant the past few weeks. I am sorely disappointed in their lack of communication and seeming lack of customer service. I've been with them for the past 4 years, but apparently since I'm a little fish in a giant pond, I don't matter. At least that's what it's feeling like at the moment.

For anyone who might have tried to access my website in the past couple of weeks, I'm not entirely sure what happened, but my name servers were moved without my knowledge. It took entirely way too long to get it back up again, and now I can't even log in to reupload any pages that were there before... =___=... Any time I had dedicated to try to update things has gone to waste.

Bah! Humbug!!

I know I've been remiss about updating regularly, but I do have a super-valid reason why... I'll be participating in a group show in a couple of weeks at Pop Monster in Torrance! :) It is a 4-person show including Sol Park, Sayaka Ito, Brian Bennett, and myself.

It's been a crazy few weeks, but I'm super excited about being able to show some new work. I've created 4 new pieces for the show, and I really hope you all can make it out. Prints + Previews

So the good news is... I've been busy. :D But, the bad news is... I've been really really really busy. And unfortunately, most of my time has been taken up by things not related to art work. :( And of course, that means I haven't been able to just settle down and crank out the amount of work that I know I'm capable of. Ahh... Sometimes I wish it was easier to become a full-time artist... :P

But in the midst of all this is a ginormous silver lining. I've been in contact with art gallery + collectible + toy store POP MONSTER. They're located in the Torrance, CA area and they carry an amazing assortment of vinyl toys, art books, collectibles and art prints. Amazingly enough, after submitting some photos of my work, they emailed me and I am now selling some limited edition prints at their store~ :D Words can't even describe how excited I am about this. Not only are they willing to take a risk by promoting an unknown artist like me, but there's also some talks about being able to show some new artwork there in the near future!!! *insert appropriate jig here*

Above is a snapshot of two of my prints (top row center are the hear + see prints) on their store wall. Hear + See + Speak is available in a limited edition of 25. I'll also be selling 25 editions of Futari + Aviary.

As this new development is coming into fruition, there will be a few changes to the print shop. With the new limited edition prints becoming available, I'll be updating the page so it will be more readily available for those who may not be in the SoCal / Greater Los Angeles area. :)

And as this day approaches its end, I must once again sign off. I will hopefully post more within the next couple of weeks.

So I have been a bit remiss about updating the blog as regularly as I'd like. But, like everyone out there, I've got to pay the bills first. :P In any case, I've finally got some free time now and just in time to share some great new things and hopefully some new opportunities...

The Print Shop is officially open!! *does a little dance* It seems like a long time coming since I got the idea in my head, but thankfully there were no real bumps along the way. The past few weeks have been surprisingly busy and a little bit hectic. And with the summer months coming I know that probably won't let up. This time of year always seems to be chock full of things to do, people to see, and just fun things in general. I've got lots of social-type things planned ahead so I may not always have time to get online... But distance makes the heart grow fonder?? :P Maybe not...

I will hopefully have some time to create in between all the fun gatherings, so I promise to post something worthwhile and creative soon! I have been doing some light research in my downtime. There's always something new to see: a great logo, clever promotional items, fabulous packaging and even a bit of whimsical interior design.

I'm also in dire need of a new scanner. Mine isn't even compatible to my OS anymore. :( So that's also putting a damper on my updating... For now, have a couple of (very badly lit) photos/snapshots of the concepts/ideas I'm trying to experiment with.

Print Shop - COMING SOON!!

I seriously can't even fathom people wanting to purchase something I created. I'm very humbled by all the positive response that I've received from friends, family, and strangers alike. I've been hard at work finding the best solution to creating prints economically while trying to maintain the quality of the product. I think I've achieved that and hopefully the demand for prints has not wavered.

Here's a little (and I mean very little :P) sneak peek at the print shop!!

There are still a few technical details and I've still got a few things to prep, but permit pending, the shop should open by June!! I'm super excited... And I hope everything goes according to plan~ :D

I've got a few ideas brewing around, so stay tuned for new concepts/paintings in the works!

Opening Reception

So yesterday (Thursday, April 8th) was the opening reception for the Speak Up! campaign gallery show. Everything went amazingly well... Even considering that I probably sounded like a fool trying to speak in front of an audience... But even with my ginormous fear of public speaking, it was an amazing turnout and a wonderful experience. Just a few snapshots below.

Also, for the few people interested in prints, I'm researching some options and will definitely post more info as soon as I get that squared away. I'm so grateful and humbled that people would want prints of my work, so I'm trying to get the best possible quality for a fair price. It will most likely be a short run, limited edition, but we'll see how things pan out... :)

number 7!!

Woohoo! I've finished redesigning, re-coding, rearranging, reuploading the new layout for my website!! Yes, I'm doing a little happy dance. :P

I have been planning this rebrand for some time now and it's finally starting to come into fruition. With the show coming up, and the (recently) new year, I thought it would be great to become more official and try to ~~finally~~ brand myself as an artist. I've never done anything like it before, but it's been pretty fun (minus some technical difficulties). I'll be sure to put up the other self-promo periphera in a few days or so, so everyone can see the whole design package.

In addition to the clean/mellow new layout, there are also several new projects I've been neglecting to post as well as a sneak peak at the paintings I have up at Cal Poly Pomona. So, what are you waiting for??

In other words... I am finished! :) 8 paintings done in about two months. Talk about a rush! (Literally and figuratively). I'm pretty proud of how they turned out... considering this is not my trained profession. It's been so much fun, but I have to admit having this project checked off is a pretty big relief.

After installing the eye hooks and wires, they will be finished and mounted this coming Tuesday and they will be on display at Cal Poly Pomona's Bronco Student Center for the month of April. Alongside will be the photography exhibit of one Michelle Carrillo. Once the exhibit opens I'll make sure to post some photos of the finished sets here.

Three weeks and counting

Alright... It's the home stretch, and I've got 5.9 paintings done... TT___TT... So close!!

I do like being busy, but man I'm getting old and getting tired is so easy to accomplish. Hahaha... But I've got to keep going if I want to achieve my creative goals. Sometimes you just gotta put your nose to the grindstone and keep working...

Anyway, on a less self-deprecating note: my self-promo cards came in the mail yesterday! :D

And they look pretty spiffy, if I do say so myself. It's nothing too fancy, but hopefully it'll help spread my name out there and promote the work that I do as an artist.

I got them printed through Overnight Prints, and I highly recommend their services. They're based in south OC, but I think they outsource their actual prints to somewhere on the east coast. This is the second project I've ordered through them, and I really like the quality of their products. The prices aren't too shabby either.

Anyway, The front shows the series "hear see speak" and the back has some info for the Speak Up! show coming in April.

Three (almost) down... Seven (!!!) more to go

So...... I'm late... Like... super-behind-not-even-funny-it's-really-kinda-stressful late... I'm now officially four paintings behind schedule, and I am trying to haul arse like there's no tomorrow. Because, well, it seems to be the case!

For those of you aspiring to be artists/designers/anything in the creative field... Don't let the popular belief that "art is easy" fool you. It's hard, kids!! Only do it if you love it.

But man, if you love it, you've really got no choice but to work on it, work with it, work for it... :T

Here's a little sneak peek at the progress of the paintings from the previous post. Wow... Say that five times fast...

Real life responsibilities seem to be getting the best of me these days, but hopefully over the next couple of weeks, I'll have made some kind of significant progress overall... My personal deadline is fast approaching, with a mallet and other pointy objects threatening me with mass destruction. Wish me luck!! But most of all, wish me time!!

drive-by blogging

Hey kids... :) Just wanted to drop in and say a quick hello. As the title says this is just a short post to share a few sketches I did a couple of weekends ago at the first ever Dr. Sketchy's anti-art school session in the OC... :) It was held in Anaheim @ Rothick Art Haus and is a bi-monthly event... And I highly encourage any OC'ers that aren't able to drive to the LA chapter to attend.

If you aren't able to tell by my fairly quick sketches, the theme was Alice in Wonderland. The model featured was one Marlena Dali, and she was just super cute as Alice... I regret not staying the whole night, but as always, any chance to draw from life is great.

I'm starting to get down to business and transferring my sketches onto panels so stay tuned for some WIP photos...

It is way past my bedtime, and I've still got a couple days of this 9-5 temp gig, so I bid you all a good night~

I am a busy bee!

2010 has been pretty friggin good to me... And it's just getting started. I am as giddy as a schoolgirl with a crush on a pop star, and I am so grateful for all the new projects and opportunities life has been presenting me with. If only there were more time in the day!!

Full-time work may not be abundant for me right now, but I sure as heck am loving the plethora of work that I'm able to partake in. I'm lucky enough to get a regular commission from a former co-worker...

And of course the freelance design gig for a great company... (digitalchocolate.com)... As with most booming companies, the site is a work in progress, but the design aesthetic is there and it has been such a great experience working on it...

And also finally having a solid grasp of my life's goals and how I want to proceed with my self as an artist and a designer...

Sorry, it's still very much in progress and therefore kind of hush hush! :) But hopefully it will be everything I imagine it to be.

My outlook on life has never been brighter. Woohoo~! *fist pump*

Happy 2010 everybody!! I hope the new year brings us all good health, happiness, and many more creative projects to come!!

2009 was a great year. Full of life's usual ups and downs. But for the most part I am thankful for all experiences because they have taught me invaluable lessons about life, friendship, and working your butt off to do what you love.

The new year means a fresh new start and some much needed resolutions. One of which, of course, is to just create more. More designs, more drawings, more paintings, more tangible evidence of creativity. And of course, there is the usual suspects: lose weight! be more healthy! and all that jazz. :P

Time to get organized, list goals, and make sure that no time is wasted.

Life is short. Live it to the fullest. :)

Prep + Planning

Been quite busy, as is the norm during the holidays... :) but it's always good to spend time with family & friends that you can count on. Work is coming in fairly steadily, and planning for the show is pretty much done. :D

Now it's down to business and just putting ideas to onto panel and hopefully seeing come to fruition. :) I'm really excited for the new year to come. Fresh starts are a great thing. And hopefully after the holiday craze dies down, there'll be a more steady flow of works in progress.

Updates galore! (aka you may want to skip the text & just look at the pretty links… )

So I swear I haven't forgotten about this blog already. I mentioned the upcoming show in April. It will be held at Cal Poly Pomona for their Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage month. I'm so excited, but in that excitement also brews a lot of anxiety and insecurity. I've been brainstorming ideas (and then scrapping them), and I'm hoping the finished product turns out as awesome as it is in my head.

True to my type-A personality, I've drawn out a list of things to do and even marked deadlines for me on my calendar. It helps me prevent freaking out when all the thoughts in my head start colliding with one another. :P

I promise to post some WIP pics as soon as I make something worthy of busting out the digicam. On a different note, my co-show-artist is a great photographer named Michelle Carillo. I was lucky enough to be able to see her in action when she shot photos for the show. And she's got some uploaded HERE on her blog. They are fan-freakin-tastic, and I can’t wait to see it all up and finished.

I’ve also been keeping quite busy with some freelance projects: website layout, creating logos, and company branding. Not to mention I myself am trying to establish my own brand for my work(s). And as uber fun as it is, it’s also the hardest thing I’ve tried to do. Decisions decisions!

So needless to say I’ve got a lot of things on my creative plate, and that can make a girl burn out like no other. I stay sane by looking at pretty things. Simple, I know, but it’s such great inspiration to see these wonderfully designed objects, handmade pieces of art, and amazingly talented artists. Below are just a few of my favorite things and I visit them every morning to start my creativity.

I've pretty much been on an art high lately. It's kind of all I can think about. I've been trying to work out what I want to do in life and all signs point to this creative outlet where I'm the boss of me. It's scary and exciting at the same time.

I'm trying to absorb as much as I can and go to openings and shows whenever I have a free weekend, and it's been AMAZING so far. The Giant Robot Biennale at JANM was a spectacular opening. The venue itself is pretty large, and it was really crowded. Of course the art was amazing... (as is expected of the GR artists.) There's also the limited Three Apples show in Culver City's Royal/T. Be warned, it is Hello Kitty... But the art displayed goes much deeper than what the word Sanrio conjures up in your mind.

And most recently, the Dr. Sketchy Roadshow. I'm so excited that they've started this. I had always wanted to go, but since I'm deathly afraid of driving to LA, I've been hard-pressed to attend their bi-monthly sessions. So how was I supposed to pass up the opportunity to experience it when they were taking the session to me? (Well, not directly to ME, but pretty darn close).

The first stop of their road show was at the Rothick Art Haus in Anaheim. Being the nerd that I am, I got there first, but had prime choice seating. It's a whole new life drawing experience. Just having the rush of being in an art session again was such a great feeling. Add to the fact that the models were great and superbly in character the whole time, it was an awesome experience. So awesome, in fact, that I really want to go to their regularly scheduled sessions. Maybe not super regularly, as the trip to LA is still a great trek for an OC'er like me, but it would be totally worth it for the great atmosphere, great models, and the great feeling of satisfaction after being able to get ideas flowing onto paper, and seeing sketches come to life.

And p.s. winning a book after being chosen by one of the awesome models ain't half bad either... :)

painting // DUET

So this past Summer, I took an awesomely fun class @ Fullerton Junior College. It had been a very very long time since I had picked up a brush and actually created something with oil paints. And more and more I find myself inclined towards that direction in my artwork. Well, that class was one of the best experiences for me, and it helped me realize that I just need to keep moving forward if I want to make this art thing work. :)

In any case, since it was a Summer course, time was my biggest enemy. And while I didn't get to finish my paintings, I believe I got a great start to some pretty cool pieces and a real theme that runs through my work.

One of the first paintings I did for class was a warm-up just to get back in touch with the brush, the paints, and the canvas. She's been untitled for the longest time, but now that she's got a companion piece, I think it's safe to say that together, they are called "Duet."

There's still a long way for me to go. And plenty more for me to learn, but I'm pleased to announce that I'll get a chance to hone my craft and practice my skill. A great friend is giving me a chance to exhibit my work in a show in April next year.

It goes without saying that this makes me beyond excited, but it also gives me that great anxious feeling of thinking of ideas, brainstorming for themes, stories, and just getting down to the basics of creating.

Hope you guys will stick around long enough for that to happen, because I would love to share that with you. :) And I hope you keep a lookout for what's to come.

Saturday Sightings

So... I know I've never been much of a conversationalist. I usually get nervous jitters when I have to speak to someone over the phone that I'm not accustomed to communicating with regularly... so it really shouldn't be a shock anymore when I meet someone new and completely make a fool of myself.

I just got back from Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra where one of my favorite artists, James Jean, was doing a book signing. I had previously bought his Process Recess 3 : The Hallowed Seam and giddily waited my turn in line. We had a few good words back and forth when he caught me off guard in asking if I was going to attend the show next week. I (being dumbstruck, of course) said something really personal about having a family thing to go to, but that I would try my hardest to go to the show. He (being awesome and probably used to bumbling idiots like me) reassured me that the show will be up for a good month and a half, so as not to worry about attending the opening. *sigh*...

This is why I prefer texting over calling... blogging over conversing. I'm just horrible at it! I get so tongue-tied around these people that I admire so much that I walk away thinking "did that just happen?" Yes... It most certainly did. Ah well... maybe next time I'm in a similar scenario I can think of this post and quickly create an anecdote in my head more fitting of the conversation at hand.

But the night's miserable failure at conversation was not wasted because I not only got to meet him, shake his hand, and briefly converse with him, but I also was able to get my book signed. :) There's even a super cute awesome sketch.

And I also finally got my hands on Kindling... :D Now my only conundrum is running out of wall space to put all this awesome art... Ain't so bad a problem, now that I think about it.

Why hello there Blogger, it's been a while. :)
Hi everyone, my name is Grace and this here is my (semi) new blog.

I've been on livejournal for the past several years, and while my love for it will always remain, I think I'm due for a fresh start.

I like art, design, illustration, animation, and this new resurgence of vintage and craftsy things. And, while I'm very much style-challenged, I do love me some fashion.

I believe I'm on the verge of some great new changes in my life, and hopefully that will reflect in the artwork that I produce. So stay tuned... And hopefully you like what you see.
